Medicare Basics
For more than 50 years, Medicare has provided individuals age 65 and older with health insurance coverage. This U.S. government-sponsored program is divided into four parts:
Part A – Hospital insurance: Covers hospital stays
Part B – Medical insurance: Covers doctor & outpatient visits
Part C – Medicare Advantage Plans: Offer some private insurance options in addition to Medicare A & B including Part D
Part D – Prescription drug coverage
Medicare Eligibility
Those who are eligible to receive Medicare coverage are:
- Individuals 65 and older
- Individuals who are under 65 and qualify on the basis of a disability.
- Individuals of any age who have end-stage renal disease
How Does Medicare Supplement Insurance Work?
Medicare Parts A and B provide coverage for most of your potential healthcare and hospitalization needs. However, there are some out-of-pocket “gaps” that enrollees need to consider. These gaps include deductibles, co-payments and coinsurance.
Medicare typically covers only 80% of your medical expenses. Uncovered charges can add up if there is a major injury or illness and can even cause financial hardship. This is where Medicare supplemental insurance comes into play. These “Medigap” policies are designed to bridge the gaps in Medicare’s benefits. Plans A thru N are offered by private insurance companies. They are purchased in addition to your Medicare Parts A & B.
